Asylum in Paradise by K. Carter is a romantic suspense novel, bringing together a single father and a “mermaid” with a dark secret. J.R. Vitiello and his daughter, Olivia, never expected to find a woman washed up on his private beach. Mia has escaped from a seemingly hopeless situation to find herself adopted by the Vitiellos. Olivia is smitten with her “mermaid,” and Mia soon finds a place as a nanny in the small family, and J.R.’s heart. However, both J.R. and Mia’s pasts creep back in, causing the pair to doubt if they could ever be happy together. Will old flames destroy their budding relationship, or will they overcome all to find love?
I really enjoyed the beginning of this novel. The build-up was steady, and Ms Carter slowly introduced conflict into the mix. I felt the characters were quite memorable and unique, including Olivia, who I found to be completely endearing. The story flowed, allowing the romance to build between J.R. and Mia. My only criticism would be that the ending felt very rushed, and I was left wanting to know more about certain parts of the story, as well as characters. Aside from this, I did love the premise of the story, and the mermaid parts. I could visualize the characters and locations. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the parties at Oma’s house, and Tyler, J.R.’s younger brother. The more delicate elements were tactfully handled. Asylum in Paradise by K. Carter is an easy read, sure to be enjoyed by romantic suspense fans.
