Everyone deserves a second chance at redemption. Asphalt Eden by Sausha Douglas Lovell and D.E. Siems is the true story of Sausha Douglas Lovell, who found himself mired in a life of crime and drugs ever since he left home at the tender age of twelve. After his parents' marriage broke down, Sausha could never feel himself at home. He left home to find sanctuary in the streets of Salt Lake City, Utah, which welcomed him with open arms. It doesn't take much time for him to start doing acid and committing petty crimes, leading to a stint at the Rivendell Psychiatric Hospital of Utah. As the years go by, the crimes become greater but now with heroin as his drug of choice. This is Sausha's story of rising from the depths of hell to find redemption.
D.E. Siems does a commendable job of bringing Sausha Douglas Lovell's story to the pages. Anyone who has ever lost themselves to their vices or traversed through adversity at a young age will find Asphalt Eden to be not only relatable but also inspirational. This book perfectly demonstrates the resilient spirit of humans who have the power and ability to rise above their circumstances and continue to strive to be a better version of themselves. It is mindboggling to me how a child of twelve could have survived the streets of a crime-infested city and eventually made it out. Overall, I found Asphalt Eden to be a moving memoir that offers a ray of light even in the darkest of places.
