Ascending Davos: A Career Journey from the Emergency Room to the Boardroom by Meghan Fitzgerald is a no-nonsense breakdown of how to rise up the healthcare administration ladder, and hopefully to improve individual hospitals and practices based on the author's extensive background. I appreciated that you really see how the author herself had failed or got stuck, rather than just a list of triumphs. Reading like a how-to guide combined with a memoir, the book does a good job of holding the attention of even someone with no experience in the healthcare world or in the world of Fortune 500 companies for which Meghan later consults.
Ascending Davos is a very well-constructed book. I enjoyed the overall appearance as it was enhanced by the chapter headings, the overall organization of the chapters, and generally how well the book flowed from one point to the next. I'll admit, as a layperson, I did feel a bit lost at times regarding some of the specifics of both healthcare and of business and entrepreneurship, but felt that the arguments made were logical and explained flawlessly. Meghan Fitzgerald writes very well. She is as skilled with painting a scene as she is at supporting her assertions about the medical field with concise, factual details. As a reader, you leave this book with the feeling that you have a checklist in front of you of what you need to do to achieve your goals. It's a motivational as well as an informative book, with memorable anecdotes, real-life experience, and a go-get-em conclusion.
