As We Forgive: A Christian Cozy Mystery by Susan Byrde is the first book in her Ivy Greene series. Four years ago, Ivy Greene moved back to the small town of Pinnacle with her young daughter, Anna. Her dog business is booming, keeping her busy, and allows her plenty of time to work on their obedience. One day while reminding Bentley of his obedience training, Ivy is dragged through the woods and deposited at the foot of a murder victim. Ivy can't help but investigate the killing of a grumpy old man she once threatened as a ten-year-old. Things get confusing when she discovers it could be any of three men. Two men recently moved to this town while the other was a tenant of the victim. As Anna works on memorizing The Lord's Prayer for school, Ivy learns some of her lessons through the eyes and heart of an innocent child.
I found myself laughing out loud while reading As We Forgive. Susan Byrde has a knack for weaving humor, suspense, and family values into an enthralling novel. The author adds a unique charm to her plot by including her dog friends, an eccentric cockatoo, and her daughter's creative school experiences. The pace gets dangerously fast when Ivy's daughter is threatened, and she doesn't know if the men she needs to rely on are trustworthy. The characters are well-developed, with compelling attributes. Between Ivy's charisma, Anna's school antics, and Detective Swain showing up at the most inconvenient times, this book reads like a roller coaster and ends with a satisfying and thrilling conclusion.
