As Vaan Made Us by Jonathan Sobe is a dystopian thriller set in a world ravaged by a holy war spanning decades. The citizens of New Lysia live under the strict rule of Regent Samuels, a zealous devotee of Vaan, convinced of an upcoming apocalypse which he thinks can be avoided by sacrificing his seemingly invincible sons, Xanis and Tak. He hires an ex-convict named Jish to assassinate Tak and deliver redemption to the people. However, all Jish wants is to dismantle the theocratic powers. Meanwhile, Xanis's girlfriend Lashel breaks free of her shackles and finds herself in the company of Tak and Jish. Tak must now reluctantly embrace his destiny and prepare for a final confrontation with his brother to save the world. But the shocking return of his former lover complicates things further.
A dystopian thriller with a unique premise, As Vaan Made Us is a delicious blend of tragic romance, nail-biting thrills, and fast-paced action sequences. Author Jonathan Sobe crafts an intricate plot filled with numerous twists and turns to create a pulsating page-turner of a novel that entertains from start to finish. The multiple POV narrative deftly incorporates the varying factions involved in the story. Each character is well-developed, and their backstories add a ton of depth to their personalities. The author uses expository scenes sparingly, and as such, it takes a while to grasp things. But after fifty pages or so, you find yourself completely immersed. If you enjoy well-written dystopian novels, As Vaan Made Us is the book for you.
