In Arrow the Sky Horse: The Discovery by Melody Huttinger, Meadow (13 years old) and her family, including a few horses, move from Oregon to Arizona as the family took an offer to work there, leading dude tours on horseback. During the drive to their new temporary home, Meadow’s father tells a story about a wild stallion called Arrow. Meadow’s fantasy leads her to seeing glimpses of the majestic stallion here and there from that moment on – but is it really only her fantasy? She also has visions of a Native American woman, and during a rather adventurous outing, she comes into the possession of an old amulet. From that day on, Meadow believes that it is her mission to free Arrow from being a captive (captured by whom and why I won’t mention as that’s an important part of the plot). She tells her new friend about the ancient Indian site she found when she discovered the amulet, and the troubles truly begin. The professor who arrives with his team, after her friend contacted a university to catalog the precious find, is not what he claims to be. In addition, her family has to deal with an unhappy client who wants an awful lot of money from them. There are financial troubles, horse troubles – and of course also troubles of the heart as Meadow feels something more than just friendship for a boy.
I enjoyed reading Arrow the Sky Horse by Melody Huttinger. It was an interesting mix of adventure, animal and mystery story. The book is obviously aimed at younger readers, but older readers who enjoy stories involving animals and Native American mysteries will also be able to enjoy Meadow’s story – after all, one is never too old for a good story with some plot twists. During some moments, I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen but then was pleased with the outcome, even though some plot elements definitely made you feel worried about the fate of the animals (and sometimes the people, too). If you love horses and adventures that take place in interesting landscapes, then this book is for you!
