Armored Armadillo to Zippy Zebra: An Alliterative Anthology of Animals, written by Carol Baker and illustrated by Izzy Bean, is a delightful book with whimsical pictures for each letter of the alphabet. The alliteration of phrases like “an armored armadillo ambling across abundant active anthills” teaches the sounds of letters as well as provides fun word games for children. Each picture has additional items that begin with the same sound.
The illustrations are especially vivid and could be used for imaginative storytelling. When my children were young, they liked to make up stories about favorite pictures, and this is the type of book they would have loved. It makes an interesting challenge to explain why an airplane, acorn and anchor are in the same picture with an armadillo! Carol Baker has chosen interesting animal words that little children love to learn and say, words like wallaby, rhinoceros, and platypus.
This book is entertaining for children aged 1-6, and it might provide useful practice for children mastering certain sounds. An important part of speech acquisition is recognizing sounds and distinguishing between similar sounds (like between the words won and run). This book might help with this process in an entertaining way. It could also be fun for students learning English as a second language. Further ideas for educational opportunities are provided in the appendix, along with a list of all the extra items. (I found them all!) Armored Armadillo to Zippy Zebra is an imaginative reading experience for young children, especially animal lovers and those who love playing with sounds!
