Apparition Lake by Daniel D. Lamoreux and Doug Lamoreux is a supernatural tale of nature exacting revenge for men’s intrusive and insolence ignorance. In 1878, a holy man, Silverbear, and the Shoshone people decided to take action against the white men who poached their sacred land and animals. They called upon the Great Spirit Bear to help them in this matter. Fast forward to 1996, Chief Ranger Glenn Merrill and Jennifer Davies, a young wildlife biologist, are dealing with poachers that brazenly killed some of the bears of Yellowstone National Park. Their investigation is further complicated by the mysterious deaths of tourists and park rangers.
The author's insight into Native American culture in Apparition Lake is rewarding. The substantially detailed description of the Yellowstone National Park as the story setting is also gratifying for someone like me who has never visited the place. The prose is clean and limpid – most importantly, it is easily imaginative. The characters, main and secondary, are credible characters which are evidently well-thought out. I absolutely gravitated toward Jennifer Davies, the tough biologist who prefers to be called J.D.
On the other hand, readers who love a fast-paced plot may feel that parts of the story invariably slow down any pace that the sequence of events might have gained. Apparition Lake eases readers into the mystery and suspense, escalating the plot in a moderate tempo. On the whole, this is a supernatural tale that will appeal to readers who love nature, as the beauty of Yellowstone is excellently depicted.
