The hidden journal of Michael Brandon Kohler is the story of Apalachicola Pearl. I was pulled back into the late 1860s and into the Civil War in Apalachicola, Florida. Pearl, a young child, is the heroine, though we don’t learn her real, surprising mission until the very end of the book. We quickly come to know and love Michael as he tells the story, Caroline, the woman he loves, and his longtime boyhood friends, Hatch and Jacob. Stillman Smith, a freed slave and a stranger to town, becomes friends with Michael and they join forces to fight the Rebel Guard and protect their community from harm. The Rebel Guard - responsible for the mysterious “Marr, Smith Affair” - is made up of men looking for trouble and finding it. I hesitate to give you more detail because it will take so much away from the enjoyment of reading Apalachicola Pearl for yourself.
I really enjoyed Apalachicola Pearl and was pulled into the story from the beginning, never losing interest, and being sorry to see the story end. Michael Kinnett has written a historical novel that feels real, with characters that became my friends. I believe that readers who enjoy stories about the Civil War will find this book impossible to put down. It is a relatively short book, only 178 pages, and is a very quick read. It has all the elements, making it a top notch read, and I highly recommend it.
