Answer Anxiety by Anthony Santen is a comprehensive guide for learning to manage your anxiety. Santen discusses the science behind a person’s response to anxiety and the levels that range from more acceptable to degrees that need attention. Sleep patterns and diets of healthy, depressed, and anxious individuals are discussed, and suggestions for improvement are given by the author. In addition, productive behavior and other considerations are detailed which may help lower an individual’s anxiety level.
Anthony Santen points out that it is unrealistic to believe we can function without a certain amount of anxiety, although several other books I’ve read on the subject emphasize the need to eliminate stress. As the latter is impossible, I appreciated the forthright way this author discourages coping mechanisms when a person is stressed and instead suggests that an individual should adopt more self-care practices, like adequate sleep and a better diet, as a springboard for improvement. He encourages readers to focus on the present and practice mindfulness. He provides examples and viewpoints that cover all sides of the issues surrounding the topic of depression, empowering readers to make more informed choices.
Santen covers everything from the possible causes of anxiety to the stigmas surrounding mental health using clear language readers will understand and appreciate. The book was educational as well as informative, and some of the insights in the guide could prove to be breakthroughs for those who read it! I recommend Answer Anxiety to readers who would like to learn ways they may reduce their stress and improve their well-being.
