Phoebe Fox had always dreamed of being a Prima Donna ballet dancer; she devoted her life to nothing but dance with it all leading to an audition at the School of American Ballet in New York. The audition began beautifully and then the unthinkable happened resulting in failure, leaving Phoebe devastated. When her great-aunt Weezy requested Phoebe to accompany her on a trip from Santa Fe to Denver, Phoebe’s mother quickly accepted the offer for her. During the journey they stopped at Inspiration Peaks Hot Springs Resort where Phoebe met Cody Moon. The women had meant to spend only one night at the resort but car trouble stretched their visit into a blissful five days. Cody and Phoebe fell head over heels in love but unfortunately Cody’s sister Wynonna would not stand for it. As the women journey on to Denver, Weezy shared her story of a love that could not be. It was during WWII and the young man’s name was Mickey McGuire. Weezy would always mourn the fact that she did not know what had ever happened to him.
“Another Time, Another Place” by Mary Verdick is a mesmerizing tale of true love. My heart was warmed by this story; I felt as if I was sitting in the back seat of their car traveling along with them and sharing in their adventure. It was gratifying to watch great-aunt Weezy and Phoebe interact. While Phoebe felt her dreams had come to an end, Weezy demonstrated that there was life after dance, and there was life after heartbreak. I had already guessed the family secret but that did not distract from the emotions the discovery provoked. Mary Verdick is a very talented author and one of my favorites.
