Another Side of the Heart by C. H. Lazarovich is a touching novel about a mother grieving the loss of her only child. As the anniversary of her daughter’s death approaches, Mary Devere decides to spend the summer alone at the cottage she and her husband bought when Lily was a baby. Mary knows little about anything except pain. She hopes Kilkare Island will help her explore herself and heal from her child’s death. The loss makes her second-guess everything, and the memories flood her mind, tormenting her. But when she meets a 21-year-old young woman the same age as her dead daughter, Mary connects with her. However, she discovers something that makes her think of her first love and choices when she was eighteen. Mary slowly finds the courage to be herself as the past catches up to her.
Another Side of the Heart is a heartrending story about grief and healing. This heartfelt novel plunges into a dark and painful moment in a mother's life, and it shows her struggle to heal from her youthful decisions and losing her daughter. It's so much about marriage, motherhood, abortion, resurrecting an old love, decisions a woman makes about childbearing, youth choices, and the way they might make us feel later in life: guilty, shameful, regretful, or hopeful and motivated to make the changes we long for. I firmly believe that many mothers who have lost a child will benefit from this book and find themselves deeply moved by it. C. H. Lazarovich's book is superbly written and full of emotion, sadness, and hope.
