Angeline by Angelica Markus and Julianne Snyder is an event/era historical fiction novel that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy stories that takes place during the roaring twenties. Angeline Moretti’s story begins in 1928 in New York City when she meets the famous handsome actor James Howard and dissuades him of the idea that she is a damsel in distress that needs a knight to save her. A second meeting at an acting class leads to the couple dating, but a walk past a speakeasy leads to the party life calling Angeline’s name. She soon finds herself being an actress during the day and a party girl at night, with each version of her life having a love interest. Will she decide to throw her lot in with the wealthy James Howard or with bad-boy Link Cartwell from the speakeasy?
Angeline by Angelica Markus and Julianne Snyder is a well-written book whose intriguing cover image quickly grabbed my attention and whose story kept me enraptured from the first page to the last. I really enjoyed Angeline Moretti’s transition from an aspiring actress to a nighttime party girl. I enjoyed seeing how different aspects of her character came to life depending on if she was living her daily life or nightlife. I found myself really connecting with her on a personal level and feeling like I had to keep turning pages to find out what type of life she would choose for herself and who, if anyone, she would choose to share it with. Overall, this book was a great read and I loved the way the authors did such an accurate job in portraying the time period of the book.
