Angelic Wars: First Rebellion by Rick E. Norris is a promising new series that mixes fantasy, theology, music, and technology. This innovative work of fiction allows readers to similarly experience the aesthetics of the music track that goes with it by activating a QR code inserted in the novel. This creative feat is not a retelling of the Book of Enoch. Rather, it is an original work rooted in biblical passages. We are introduced to Azarias, an angel in the Septemviri Order who, along with six others, is tasked by God to seek out the angels who have chosen to take part in the celestial rebellion that threatens the Holy Order. The Septemviri’s mission is to offer them grace or face spiritual warfare. But Satan, the rebellion’s powerful leader, seems to have made up his mind as he has been successful in convincing a third of Heaven’s population that their existence is very limited if they only do the Creator’s bidding.
I enjoy reading fantasy novels that incorporate elements of religion, and this new series not only incorporates such elements but is the central theme of the plot. Rick E. Norris has put the excitement back into stories that pertain to angels and demons in a way that is not blasphemous. It even has a scholarly touch to it as he uses footnotes to guide readers with passages, and this is useful for readers who are not familiar with Christian Scriptures. What really blows my mind is the music that goes with it, and it makes reading a pleasure that also immerses you in an aural experience. Whether you are religious or not, Angelic Wars is a must-read work that offers an engaging look at the origins of evil and the power of choice.
