In Ancient Enemy by Tiffany A. O’Brien, Dr. Ken Richter and his team came across an astounding megalith. Evidence shows that it may have originated at a place in Salem, New Hampshire, known to locals as Mystery Hill. Mark Welton, a second year archaeology major, is one of the students assigned by Richter to watch over the team’s expensive tools on the site at night. When a fellow student bails out on him on the job, Mark goes to Mystery Hill alone, despite Dr. Richter’s warning.
During his watch, Mark sees a black shadow which stands out in the darkness. A strange mantra echoes in his mind, hypnotizes and renders him unaware of his surroundings. It would be the first of a series of disturbing phenomena for Mark, and the only people who can help him are Dr. Richter, the demonologist Lydia Ross, and her associates. Ancient Enemy has a great and intriguing premise that will grab the attention of fans of the genre. Some familiar horror elements reminded me of several supernatural accounts that I’ve watched or read about.
As a whole, the story development is decent. Some parts of the narrative certainly can be more polished and this would make the plot move faster. That said, the short chapters effectively compensate for this aspect and make way for a fast paced reading. The characters are well fleshed out and the prose is clear cut. The psychological effects are brilliant; readers wouldn’t want to read this book late at night. Overall, this is a fascinating paranormal tale from O’Brien and the ending seems to hint at a sequel, which I look forward to.
