An Unnatural Selection by Jannifer Powelson is a murder mystery story. It’s Eklund, Illinois, Saturday night, and Kristen Matthews is having a quiet romantic dinner with Bret, her boyfriend. Just before they get to dessert, Kristen discovers a body – a friend’s body. A naturalist working for The Nature Station, Kristen supplies the restaurant with wildflowers and it looks like they could have been the cause of her friend’s death. Under suspicion, Kristen needs to clear her name so she starts researching poisonous plants and stumbles on secrets that some people would prefer stayed hidden. Is Kristen putting herself in the killer’s sights or can she find the answers in time?
An Unnatural Selection by Jannifer Powelson is the second in The Nature Station series. It is clear that the author is a specialist in conservation, the details in the story bear that out. I didn’t read the first book but found this one easy enough to keep up with. It is well-written with suspense, humor and a romance woven through it. The story is easy to follow, running a natural course and building up as it goes along. There are a few twists and turns, enough to keep you interested in the plot, and the characters are well-developed, even though this is the second book in which most of them have appeared. Although I found it an easy standalone read, it is probably best to read the series in order. Overall, an enjoyable story, a great way to fill a few hours and ideal for cozy mystery fans.
