Jan Blonk pens a purposeful and engaging devotional in An Unfathomable Gift: God’s Astonishing Grace. Each daily reading describes God’s grace towards us through the gift of salvation via Jesus Christ. The emphasis is that sin separates us from God, but God’s grace and His love cover a multitude of sins. Christ’s death on the cross paid the penalty of our sin, therefore nothing can separate us from God’s love. No matter how sinful or rebellious we are, God’s love and grace is infinitely greater. “We receive eternal life as an undeserved, unearned and unentitled gift.” This gift of grace is for us to enjoy throughout our lives and eternity. We are “freely forgiven and fully accepted” into God’s favor.
Jan Blonk exposes his dedication and zeal for the scriptures in An Unfathomable Gift: God’s Astonishing Grace. Blonk graciously leads the reader through daily devotions regarding the gift of grace. The overall theme is that God’s grace is the pathway to salvation. This devotional is full of rich and significant scriptures. Each page solidifies the truth from the previous day’s reading. Blonk uses simple truths and analogies to explain each biblical principle. By using this technique, he reveals the plan of salvation and the essence of grace in an easy to understand manner. Furthermore, he challenges the reader by ending each devotion with a personal, yet crucial question. By the end of the book, you have a biblically based revelation of God’s astonishing grace. Jan Blonk’s heart toward the believer and the unbeliever is understood as he encourages his readers to partake of the goodness of God found only through Jesus Christ.
