Orphan’s Heart by Lori Crane is the life story of Ellen Rodgers. It is 1862 and Ellen is seven years old. Her mother has just died, leaving her, along with her brothers and sisters, to live with Aunt Mary. Ellen shares her feelings with us, starting with her early life in Mississippi. Feeling that she doesn’t really belong, Ellen travels to Alabama to start a new life. It is hard for Ellen as she lives with first one aunt and then moves on to another aunt and uncle’s home. After many years, Ellen feels it is time to go back home to Mississippi, Aunt Mary, and her sisters. They are so glad to have her home at last and happily welcome her. She soon feels as though there is something missing from her life and decides it is time to go and visit her brothers in Texas. Upon her arrival, she meets and instantly falls in love with Sam Meek and Ellen now knows she is where she belongs and is meant to be.

Lori Crane is a fantastic writer. She makes me feel like I am part of the story and each of the characters is my friend. Orphan’s Heart is the life story of a young girl searching for love and happiness. I felt her pain and shared Ellen’s tears of sadness and joy. The ending will break your heart but give you hope. Lori Crane has quickly become my favorite author and I can’t wait to read her next book. This is a five-star book written by a five-star author.
