In the introduction to An Invisible Child: A True Story of Hope for Victims of Abuse, Lenore Ossen writes: “This is a true story. This is my story. This is about a child who grew up in a lonely, isolated world with a mother who was out of reality.” The narrative follows the journey a child suffers at the hands of a controlling mother who won’t allow her to connect with anyone else. Shut up in a world that limits her to her mother, Lenore is deprived of the basic right to grow up in a supportive environment, the right to make friends, and the right to education. But when she becomes a teenager, she revolts against her mother, and gets out in the world. But what does she know about this world? She is shocked because what she’d secretly dreamed about is far different from the reality that awaits her. Follow her journey as she moves from one crisis to the next, seeking love in places it doesn’t exist, and how she gradually heals through an understanding of where she came from.
Lenore Ossen’s memoir is engrossing, a story that explores the psychological and behavioral consequences of child abuse. It is poignant, filled with insightful passages and emotionally rich moments. An Invisible Child: A True Story of Hope for Victims of Abuse is a story of abuse simply told, a story with powerful lessons and tools to enable readers to heal. It is interesting how writing her story became a healing journey for the author. While this story castigates abuse, it explores powerful themes like the strength of family, hope, and healing. Listening to Lenore Ossen’s reassuring voice offers hope to readers that they can rise above their emotional and psychological abuse, and that they can connect to their purpose and come home to themselves. It is both inspiring and thought provoking.
