The quest for meaning is not an easy one. Douglas A. King explores two diverse scenarios using a unique approach in An Innocent World, taking readers back to where it all began, in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were born as innocents, with the prospect of an idyllic life, provided that they did not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The fall from grace that arose from their disobedience gave rise to a dichotomy of existence that the author refers to as the Innocent on the one hand, as opposed to the Guilty on the other. Both are explored in detail. Had Adam and Eve been obedient, the human race would have evolved along totally different lines in a world of innocence characterized by love, respect, and compassion, with plenty for all. Instead, humanity has been found guilty by default, living in fear, hatred, and strife, with hunger, homelessness, and warfare. Does free will inevitably lead to evil? In a world where crisis is deepening on many fronts, the question also arises as to which path we would follow if given the same choices today.
Douglas A. King used deductive logic in painting an imaginative picture of what might have been achieved in an innocent society. He poses the question as to whether a life of innocence may not be exempt from challenges, but could eventually become boring. Conversely, he points out that suffering in a guilty world can build strength of character, ultimately bringing us closer to God. The nature of God and His evolution is also explored. Now in its second edition, An Innocent World is meticulously researched regarding both biblical texts and contemporary history that spans all aspects of society. Topics such as agriculture, the environment, race and language, politics, religion, and the media are just a few that are covered. In the process, the author raises important religious and philosophical issues, such as whether we are locked into Adam and Eve’s fateful decision made all those years ago. Can we elect a different outcome or is it too late, and what of lifetimes to come? The author’s surprising conclusions may not find unanimous approval but are thought-provoking and worthy of consideration. The book should be read with an open mind and, while largely Christian-based, will make for lively debate in a wider context.
