An Inconvenient Attachment: A Love Story or Something by Vincent Magnani is not your conventional book of poetry. There is fluidity in his poems as they seamlessly bleed into one another. No titles, no page numbers, black background, this is not your average book of casual thoughts. This is revealing of the continuous soul and heart of the author. The illustrations are innocent and yet prolific. You understand his soul, as the poems run deep into his personal life. Grief, hate, love, abandonment, and romance find their way across these pages. The seemingly innocent drawings depict what a heart wants to say, without using words. The picture of Magnani holding a face over his own face, like a mask, made me think about how many people are not what they seem, including myself. These poems might not strike you as deep at first, but give them a moment to rest in your heart. Unconventional? Yes, but also powerful.
An Inconvenient Attachment: A Love Story or Something by Vincent Magnani was an odd project. Obviously meant for the eBook audience, which is perfect, it really hit hard. I loved the illustrations in their simplicity and their innocence but I felt pain when he felt hurt. I could tell by some poems that there is a lot of hurt, regrets, and fear but also so much love. It didn’t matter if there were no page numbers, or the background was black. It was fluid, like water flowing downstream, eventually meeting an ocean of emotions. It was a very different experience, which I will cherish.
