In Margaret Lynette Sharp’s An Eventful Year in Derbyshire: Derbyshire Stories 1 to 7, Jane Bingley has one of the most stressful years of her life. It starts when her youngest daughter Isobel goes off to Brighton and gets up to all kinds of mischief that almost gives her mother and father heart attacks. Along the way, we are introduced to Jane’s other children and their part in this aptly named “eventful year”. Luckily Jane and her husband Bingley have a strong and loving relationship and will weather this storm together. This is a variation on Pride and Prejudice and is told through multiple conversations and letters between some of Jane Austen’s most beloved characters, in seven parts. This short story is fast-paced and full of surprising and scandalous twists and turns.
Margaret Lynette Sharp is wonderful at bringing Jane Austen’s characters back to life in An Eventful Year in Derbyshire. She builds an interesting new world where Jane and Elizabeth are now married and have children, and how much their dynamics have changed. While this tale is based on Pride and Prejudice, Margaret has also introduced some new characters to flesh out her story and keep it interesting. I loved how Margaret tailored each character's speech to fit their personality. She also has a way of introducing a wonderful plot twist that made me audibly gasp. If you’re looking for a light-hearted Pride and Prejudice fan fiction story that will keep you on your toes, look no further than this delightful short story.
