Kass Ghayouri’s An Era of Error chronicles the life of Kay, and events that unveiled the ugly face of apartheid in South Africa, in a tale that will undoubtedly remind readers of Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton and A Dry White Season by Andre Brink; only this time readers will read an interesting social commentary on the period of the color bar in the country. Amidst the steady social unrest, brutality, and glaring acts of inhumanity, Kay, an Indian girl, discovers a love that could be stronger than death. How much will she be able to risk for this love?
Told in the first person POV, the story takes on a force that immediately connects the reader with the protagonist. The narrator is the protagonist herself, and her voice rings out clearly, allowing readers to participate in the heart-wrenching action and the joys and horrors of this period in South African history. Kay is an interesting character as she grows from a naïve Indian girl, watching and making no sense of the hostilities within her community, into a woman who takes responsibility and becomes involved in the fight after seeing the murder of her lover. The characters are well rounded and compellingly attractive, and it’s great to see them build their beliefs and act on them.
An Era of Error moves fast and is packed with action. Ghayouri is a master at building conflict in his work, but it’s the denouement that will completely blow the minds of his readers. This is a beautiful historical novel set against the backdrop of the apartheid regime in modern South Africa, a story that echoes with the powerful cry of freedom.
