America's First Black Poet; Jupiter Hammon of Long Island by Stanley A. Ransom, Jr. celebrates black poets and their contributions to culture and history. It focuses on Jupiter Hammon, a slave owned by the Lloyd family. The Lloyds allowed Jupiter to work in their house and gave him the privilege of learning with their children and studying the Bible extensively. They encouraged his writing, which can be categorized as "Negro Spiritual" verses. Jupiter's works showcased his higher-than-average intelligence through his use of coded number symbolism and clever phrasing. He challenged both masters and servants to be good Christians, who shun evil and seek the Lord. This book compiles all the accounts of Jupiter's life and poetry, highlighting his achievements.
Jupiter Hammon's story is a testament to the importance of recognizing black poets and their contributions to literature. Despite being a slave, Hammon was able to express himself through his poetry and challenge societal norms with his writings, showcasing the power of literature to transcend barriers and inspire change. Stanley A. Ransom, Jr. also uses this book to raise awareness about Black Poetry Day, its history, and its significance. The book includes pictures of Jupiter's original poems and the Lloyd family manor, giving readers a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the poems and the context in which they were created. I enjoyed reading America's First Black Poet and appreciate the work that went into researching and compiling information about Jupiter's life. It cannot have been easy, given that not much was recorded about his appearance and lifestyle. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to enjoy the remarkable work of Jupiter Hammon.
