In a sweet and heartwarming story, author Deborah D. Ferguson's debut novel Almost April is one that will be appreciated by a wide variety of readers. Following the story of twelve-year-old Sandy Evans, the reader will find what will first appear to be a sad tale. Sandy's mother was killed in a car accident. She has moved in with her father, and is separated from her half-brother, Gary, who goes to live with their mother's sister. When a grouchy old lady moves in next door to her father, it seems as if things have gotten even worse. While processing her own grief and dealing with the many changes in her life, Sandy learns that there actually may be much more to Gladys Hart, her cranky next door neighbor, than meets the eye. Will the two of them be able to help each other heal?
I so enjoyed Almost April. Author Deborah D. Ferguson writes with such a sensitivity towards children who have gone through loss and grief that it seems likely she's gone through a similar situation herself. Her characters are so realistic and relatable that the reader will find themselves thinking of them long after they've finished reading the book. Almost April would be enjoyed by any reader who loves a well-told story, anyone who has gone through loss and grief, or anyone looking for a good story with Christian undertones. I am happy that I read Deborah D. Ferguson's first book, and am very much looking forward to reading her next one.
