Cat mommies love their kittens; dog mommies love their puppies; dolphin mommies love their calves; and so many other mommies love their babies, including human mommies. There are so many interesting features in each living animal and mommies love every inch of their babies. Like the “pink, sticky, prickly tongue” of a kitten, the “tiny, flat, fur-covered horns” of the giraffe calves, the “thick muscles and their powerful lungs” of the yearling horses, and so much more. What do you think your Mommy loves best about you?
Zoe Michal’s picture book story, All Mommies Love Their Babies, is a sweet, compassionate look at the relationship between mommies throughout the animal kingdom and their babies. This story told in rhyming verse with beautiful, colorful illustrations introduces young readers to a wide selection of different animals, providing interesting tidbits about these animals, including what their babies are called. Did you know a baby giraffe is called a calf as are a baby dolphin and a baby elephant? And here I thought only cows' babies were calves. The most powerful message in this story, however, is the loving bond between mother and baby.
At the end of each animal’s presentation, the author describes this love: “Mommies love their babies (or calves or kittens or chicks) from the very start - / every minute, every day, with all of their hearts.” This is summed up beautifully at the end when the author allows the young reader to insert a picture of him/herself as they ponder all the wonderful things their mommies love best about them. Beautifully told, charming and intuitive. Loved it!
