Combining a murder mystery short story with a theatrical reading and a jazz score, All His Works: On the Eighth Day by Ainny Klover is a riveting audio experience. The story centers on Alex Bryn and his estranged partner Ciara, who share a turbulent past and a secret about their one-time musical success. When Ciara says she’s about to make an important announcement before her comeback concert, Alex is also invited to attend. It seems innocent enough up to this point. However, weeks later, Alex is contacted by a detective investigating the suspicious circumstances of her death. What ensues is a bittersweet and tragic story about two troubled people who need one another to create great music, yet find themselves resenting one another for the same reason. For a short story, it packs a solid emotional punch.
The quality of the production is flawless. I would absolutely recommend readers choose the audiobook for the full experience it delivers, which includes a jazz song in every chapter, performed by Helly Tree who has a superb voice. I’m not certain who composed the music, as it’s not mentioned in the credits, so assuming the songs are also written by the author, Ainny Klover is a very talented individual indeed. The book is also read by three narrators, Chris Sharpes, Derek McEwan, and Alex Berry, who all give very fine performances, bringing this haunting tale to life. Chris Sharpes, the main narrator playing the role of Alex Bryn, provides a masterful reading. Overall, All His Works is a creative, innovative, and highly entertaining work. It takes the audiobook from a reading of the text to a full-blown aural experience. It’s an example of fine work that will continue to haunt your thoughts long after you’re finished listening.
