"All Hands Working Together" Cruise for a Week: Meet 79 Cultures by Jackie Chase brings a fresh 'people' look to the idea of what is behind the scenes of a cruise. The themes of diversity and teamwork are well illustrated throughout the profiles of the people which the author interviewed and who were described in the book. The pictures also give it a personal touch as we get to know many of these people from their origins, culture, and work in bringing guests a fun and meaningful experience. It is obvious that the author spent a great deal of time interviewing all of the employees in the book and then had to find a meaningful way to present them. She did a very good job of doing so.
The great variety of backgrounds and countries of origin was very interesting to hear about, especially when the author described customs of their respective countries. The pieces of trivia about each country, however, became a slight distraction when in the middle of a profile. From a management point of view, the stories were very eye opening as the reader was able to see how the ship operates while getting to see the people on board ship as interesting people we might want to get to know if we are planning to cruise. Overall, "All Hands Working Together" Cruise for a Week, in spite of some structural issues, is a very interesting book that I definitely would recommend to others. If you are someone who has ever been on a cruise or plans to do so, this book will show you the human and management side of an amazing business.
