Alex the Adventurous Ant by Gia Meloni is the first in a series of books set in Letterland. Alex is a big-eyed character who is eager to explore beyond his home in the meadow. He wants to know what is on the other side of the stream. Along the way, he meets some friends who help him continue his journey. His adventure involves flying, floating, and bubbles too. Will Alex make it to the other side of the stream? What will he find there? As this is an alphabet book, many other words beginning with the letter “A” are scattered throughout the story. Each of them is highlighted in the text, so children will be sure to spot them.
Gia Meloni has created a marvelously detailed world in Letterland. The beginning spread depicts the whole area from the mountains to the meadow. The illustrations are filled with delightful features, and children will enjoy exploring all the rooms depicted in Alex's anthill. The soft, warm colors make Letterland an inviting place to visit. The additional letter “A” words are woven into the text seamlessly and provide a great way to build vocabulary. What is especially welcome is that the story does not feel forced but is an enjoyable read in addition to being a helpful tool to encourage letter recognition. As a retired children's librarian, I've seen many alphabet books. Alex the Adventurous Ant is one that parents and kids will both enjoy. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the Letterland inhabitants.
