War is brewing and all is not well on the Great Continent. Two young people, from the far reaches of the continent, must find each other and find their own true meaning of life. In the process, they must follow blind faith and a prophet, Aivan, a god no one else believes still exists. Rune, from Kansanai in the north, and Rolf from Etalentin in the south are challenged by conflicting beliefs and the one god, Aivan, also known as the One Truth, who speaks out against everything the two young people once believed to be true. In between, there are evil forces at play, royals who will stop at nothing to secure their position of power, and the two young people, now on a quest for the one truth, must face danger and possible death as their quest intensifies.

Kayla E. Green’s young adult novel, Aivan: The One Truth, is the first book in the Chronicles of the One Truth series. Told from multiple points of view, primarily the two main characters, Rune and Rolf, the plot evolves from the two extremities of the continent until the two characters discover each other and continue their quest together. The plot is well developed with believable characters and beautifully described narrative passages. Like the compelling stories of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia, paralleling the stories of faith in the New Testament, this story will appeal to young readers, challenging them to confront their own quest in a search for self-identity and faith. Powerful story – I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Rune looks forward to when she will be paired with her lover Jyri by the Vihishki gods of her village and bonded as mates for life. But just before the ceremony occurs, a series of startling events take place in her village that makes Rune doubt everything she was raised to believe. Rolf receives a vision in his village temple revealing the impending doom about to befall his people but he is at a loss as to how to warn the elders without losing his credibility, or worse, his life. These two individuals are about to find out that they have pivotal roles to play as a lost community finds its way back to the right path in Kayla E. Green's Aivan.

Popular Bible stories play a prominent part in the inspiration for this fantasy-themed novel. The principal characters are well-fleshed out with understandable backstories that are simple enough to follow. Rune's preoccupation with Jyri is both sweet and intuitive as a subplot especially when her plans for the two of them seem to be falling apart and she cannot fathom why that is the case. Rolf's attitude to carrying out the instructions of Aivan is single-minded and driven by his faith even when the potential outcome does not look good for him. These varying reactions to their different circumstances create an intriguing storyline. The conversation between the characters is smooth and fits into the genre easily without detracting from the overall message. Aivan is a well-told story with a timeless message. The setting for the story may be somewhat unorthodox but it only adds to this lovely novel by Kayla E. Green.

Aivan: The One Truth (Chronicles of the One Truth) by Kayla E. Green is a young adult fantasy about two young people living on opposite sides of the continent. The granddaughter of a senior elder, Rune is from the northern nation of Kansanai. When a prophet challenges their belief in Vihishki against Aivan, whom he claims to be the one true God, she witnesses a miracle that makes her question her faith. Rolf, on the other hand, lives with his parents in the southern nation of Etalentin. He hears voices from Aivan, claiming to be the one true God, and instructing him to go on a journey. He follows the voices and faces many temptations on the way. Growing up in a polytheist continent, Rune and Rolf examine their beliefs. Both of them try to make sense of their lives as faith brings them together.

Kayla E. Green’s Aivan: The One Truth is a fascinating coming-of-age-tale that focuses on Rune and Rolf and their search for the one true God. Some scenes are inspired by Bible stories creatively reinvented in a fantasy setting. As such, some parts of the narrative may sound familiar to many readers. The character of Rune is well-developed and relatable. Rolf’s character is a bit underdeveloped. The plot is fast-paced with many twists and turns that will grip the reader’s attention and the ending is quite unexpected. Inspirational and pleasant, The One Truth is above all a story of love and faith. It’s the perfect book to read in bed on a Sunday night.
