After by Molly McNamara Carter is the second book in the Leadership Rebellion series. It tells the story of Coen, the son of two elite figures in the Leadership Lands. He rarely sees his busy parents and is kept secure inside the four walls of his home, all alone. Coen does not know what he needs to be kept safe from; in fact, he knows nearly nothing about the world outside. That changes when his cousin, Isa, is brought to his home for a visit. She asks for Coen’s help in finding her missing best friend, believing that his possible access to the Leadership Society’s confidential information could prove to be useful. Coen soon discovers that lives are at stake, and he must find the courage to break free from the safety of his home and join the fight for justice.
Molly McNamara Carter’s After: Leadership Rebellion is a fast-paced work for young fans of dystopian fiction. Although it is the second in the series, following the story does not require having read the first book, and it can easily be read as a standalone. The ending, however, is likely to make readers want more. Through this simple yet enjoyable story, the author cleverly addresses issues such as exploitation and manipulation. The book emphasizes that a nation cannot be oppressed forever, no matter how desperately the oppressors try to control the people's lives and actions. It also shows how resistance can develop where it is least expected. After is recommended for young readers aged ten to twelve.
