Adventures in Barn Town is a clever book of hilarious anecdotes, written by Eve Culley. Written in feline narrative by a life-long resident, Ol’ Stripe (Deputy of Barn Town) shares with the reader the highlights of life in Barn Town – a barn situated on a large farm. After trudging through a vicious storm as a kitten and claiming the barn’s territory as his safe haven and his new home, Deputy Stripe is caught off-guard when trying to shoo away a trespasser, Stinky, a skunk who is quite territorial himself. When a group of humans finally moves into the Village House, however, and move their many animal companions into Barn Town, the noise, smell and attitudes of the animals take some getting used to. From an unexplained coup, led by the rooster, Cogburn, followed by committee meetings to decide Cogburn’s fate, Deputy Stripe does all he can to keep his ears and eyes open in order to maintain peace and order, with a hilarious outcome.
Eve Culley’s highly imaginative tale of life on the farm, as told by one of the animals, is extremely entertaining, reminding me of a tale I had not read since childhood – Animal Farm. The experiences had by Ol’ Stripe, prior to the humans moving in, are staggeringly hilarious. I was able to picture each scenario quite easily, having grown up as a farm girl myself, and can easily see how Eve Culley knows her way around a farmer’s routine, as well as that of the animals there. The mischief caused by the mice, the nonchalance of the skunk, the overwhelming bossiness of the raccoon, the irritating habits of the rooster and the sudden invasion by a family of humans (and their entourage) will leave your sides aching from laughter, as Deputy Stripe tells of the troubles one faces on a daily basis, being an undomesticated barn cat used to getting his way. Although in need of a polish, Adventures in Barn Town is thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to reading more of Deputy Stripe’s adventures on the farm. I recommend Adventures in Barn Town to readers aged 12 years and over who love to read about the rural lifestyle, as seen through the eyes of a cat.
