Acanemia: A Memoir of Life in the Halls of the Higher Learning by Lawrence E. Hussman is an interesting memoir that gives insight into the author’s formative intellectual experiences and moves toward his role as a professor and literary critic, English department leader, Fulbright scholar, and visiting professor in Portugal and Poland. The author aims to inspire fresh thoughts about the nation’s higher education plans, and gives suggestions so that readers can connect these to current situations and make relevant political and related points. The memoir speaks about America’s education system, faculties, and students through the eyes of the author, who served as a member of the pioneering faculty assembled at the newly established Ohio branch campus that would become Wright State University.
The book is engaging and takes readers into the author’s life and his education, from his formative years until he completed university. He speaks about his life in a very orderly and methodical manner, and many of his experiences are tangible to readers. I like the way the author speaks about learning in schools and, without blaming the system, he points out the pluses and minuses of higher education. The memoir is honest and the author has put in his experiences while writing it. The memoir also has the author’s views on being a part of the development of a new Wright State University and business model management approach. For all those students, tutors, and educators who are in American education, this memoir is helpful and informative.
