A Year Unplugged: A Family's Life Without Technology by Sharael Kolberg is the amazing journey of a family that distanced themselves from technology for a year to bring the family closer. The Kolberg family gave away all their gadgets; their TV, computers, cell phones, digital cameras, iPads and DVDs and shows readers that we can live without gadgets. The author speaks about the initial difficulties of having to do away with things they are used to and how many people viewed them as being weird and strange. As the book progresses, readers get to see how the family grows closer and spends more time talking, playing, reading, gardening, and doing more outdoor activities.
The apprehension they initially had while deciding to do away with the gadgets is tangible and the questions they asked themselves before taking the decision are also cogent and applicable. The book also motivates readers to declutter their lives by giving up technology. The book is about modern families that are used to being technology savvy and cannot do without gadgets. This family's triumph is definitely uplifting and also motivational. The author's views are candid and the result can make many readers want to unplug. On the whole, the book will make readers look into their addiction to technology.
