A Wolf's Tale by Wayne Costigan tells the story of Wolfie and Wolfina and their pack as they try to survive in the wild during a harsh winter. Wolfina gives birth to three pups and Wolfie must do all he can to take care of them. The pack takes down a stag and Wolfie is injured. He sees a strange sight of the stag's spirit which changes his outlook. He takes risks to ensure that his mate and pups are safe. Nearby, a Native American clan live off the land and are also trying to keep their families alive. There are some very strong themes in this book and this way of life is in the past when humans and animals coexisted. Nowadays, animals are not treated with the respect they deserve and are hunted for the wrong reasons. I think kids could learn from this so they have more respect for animals as they grow up.

Wayne Costigan has written a good story with A Wolf's Tale. As a fan of wolves myself, I think he portrays their pack life well as they work together to hunt and take care of each other. I think this book would appeal to young adults and slightly older children who are fond of animal tales and coming of age stories. It is a very spiritual book and shows how people don't differ too much from animals when it comes to basic survival and the love of family. I think this is a very marketable book.
