A Tribute to Tankers: From WWI to Iraq is a non fiction military history book compiled and written by Sgt. Clyde Hoch. It contains a pictorial history of the tanks used by the USA in the wars of this century from WWI on through the Iraq Wars. The first-hand accounts of tankers who served in the US Army and Marine Corps during those engagements are also featured. Hoch, who served in the US Marine Corps from 1965-1969, and saw action in Vietnam, tells his own story and provides supporting text throughout the work. The book is filled with historical photographs of the tankers whose tales are contained in this work, and there are also a number of photographs showing tanks in action.
Sgt. Clyde Hoch's military historical work, A Tribute to Tankers: From WWI to Iraq, is a remarkable and compelling tribute to those Army and Marine Corps tankers whose stories are often overlooked. I was fascinated by Hoch's discussion of the evolution of the tanks, beginning with the WWI Ft-17, a French Renault tank that had a 42-horsepower engine and traveled at 5 mph. The early tankers had so much to contend with, including the toxic fumes and injuries from shrapnel, problems that have abated to some extent but were still an issue as the reader gets to hear from the stories within this book. Even more fascinating than the mechanical data, though, are the stories of these veterans who've shared their fears, triumphs and memories throughout this book. Each one's tale stands alone and proud, and it was a thrill to get to know each of them. A Tribute to Tankers: From WWI to Iraq is an important work of military history and is most highly recommended.
