A Tree Called Gabby written by Raj and Susan Hathiramani is the tale of an apple tree that loves to share her life with those that visit her. Birds and children love Gabby so much that they ask her permission to perch on her beautiful branches, build a nest, and swing. She loves to keep the secrets that children share beneath her branches, and share her sweet apples with them when they bloom. Gabby is always ready to share a moment of love and happiness with animals and people alike. Her main concern is keeping those that love her happy, safe, and nourished. As everyone knows, everything that lives must eventually die. How has Gabby’s love influenced those around her? Is there any comfort in her passing?

I loved A Tree Called Gabby by Raj and Susan Hathiramani! It is a bittersweet story that shows how important something so simple as an apple tree can be to the animals and people around it. Gabby is an apple tree with a lovely personality that encourages love, compassion, understanding, nurturing, and sharing. I love how the birds, children, and adults appreciate and respect Gabby’s life. The Hathiramani writing duo has interwoven a wonderful message of how to cope naturally with the death of a loved one in this story. The illustrations throughout give the reader images that show Gabby’s life as well as the story does. I recommend A Tree Called Gabby to anyone of any age who enjoys a relatable story that is interesting as well as a quick read.
