Temperatures may run hot during summertime in Meadow Lake, Texas, but the heat in A Summer Place by Ann DeFee is more potent than the weather. It’s 1973 and recent high school graduates Jazzy and Charlie fall in love amid a scandal that rocks their small town. It's a test that their young love cannot endure, but they can never quite forget. When the pair returns to their hometown several years later, the feelings return as well--not that they ever left. Fate seems to put the star-crossed lovers on a journey of love lost, rekindled, and lost again. After decades of reuniting during summers in their hometown only to have their hearts broken when fall returns, will the pair finally find a way to be together?
A Summer Place by Ann DeFee packs an emotional punch. It’s a Romeo-and-Juliet story with a less Shakespearean and more satisfying ending. The reader roots for Jazzy from page one and lives every moment with her as she tries at times to shake her feelings for Charlie, goes all-in despite the odds stacked against their love, and questions herself when things again start going awry. It’s a novel full of interesting twists and obstacles to overcome, including unplanned pregnancy, an accidental death, and divorce. In addition to Jazzy and Charlie’s love story is a tale of a decades-long friendship between four friends, providing an enjoyable undercurrent of drama that grounds the story in their hometown. From Jazzy and Charlie’s sweet first taste of love to their scintillating reunion, and on through to a new plane of deep, mature, and enduring love, this novel has everything a reader would want. Recommended.
