Kevin Rogers in A Simple Model of Discipleship causes the reader to think. He presents a fresh look at an old question. Since discipleship is based on our love for God and His love for us, Kevin starts by presenting to his readers a good understanding of what love is. He does not start with the traditional acts of discipleship such as prayer, Bible study, solitude, and such, but he emphasizes the need to understand love and how it leads us to grow in Christ. Kevin shows that even though practicing the spiritual disciplines is important, they can become nothing but exercises in futility if we practice them just to practice them. There must be a deeper connection between our practices and our relationship with Christ. This book includes a study guide for further growth.
A Simple Model of Discipleship by Kevin Rogers is a road map and an encouraging guide to growing in our faith in God. Too many books on Christian discipleship spend all their time explaining how to do various spiritual disciplines. They give the “how-to” and encourage the practice, but they don’t give the “why-to.” Kevin fills that gap by explaining that practicing the disciplines without the proper motive does not produce proper growth. He explains how proper love, trust, and fear of God lead to a closer relationship with our heavenly Father. This closer relationship is bolstered by the practice of the spiritual disciplines. This is an interesting as well as inspiring book on growing in our walk with Jesus. Kevin’s writing is easy to understand and avoids being preachy. Excellent book!
