"A Rose in No-Man’s Land" is about an English Captain, Mark Tremayne, in the Australian army with a dark past that is stopping him from finding true love with the beautiful and courageous Australian army nurse, Amy Smithfield. Set in the background of World War I, amidst desperate and oftentimes brutal battles, Mark and Amy deny and fight for a love they both desperately want and need. Mark is determined to protect Amy from the secrets of his past by pushing her away, but their love for one another prevails through Australia, Egypt, and Europe. With the fleeting feeling that their lives may end tomorrow, Amy must risk everything to win all-consuming love from Mark just as she has for him.

Margaret Tanner writes with convincing historical knowledge about the backdrop of World War I and the care that brave and heroic army nurses gave to the tragic young Australian soldiers that got maimed or lost their lives during the war. This book gives a good glimpse into the lives and duties of army nurses. The characters are likable and convincing, especially the heroine, Amy, who decides to risk everything because she wants to live today, not knowing if she will be alive tomorrow. This is an enjoyable read with realistic details of how Australian soldiers were treated by the English during World War I and how alone and afraid they were so far away from home.
