The first thing that caught my attention and made me want to read A Rock Star Reader by Kindergarten by Lorraine Carey was the adorable cover depicting a young boy playing a guitar that was actually a book. What a clever book cover! Not only was this enticing for parents of a pre-kindergarten age child, but I think a child would find the cover attractive as well.
Carey provides information for parents based on her 35+ years as a children’s reading specialist and makes clear the significance of children being able to read by kindergarten. This is based not only on her own opinion, which of course is correct, but is also supported by early childhood studies performed by the Department of Education. A Rock Star Reader by Kindergarten lays out an easy-to-follow 14-step plan that stresses the importance of parents reading with their children and providing positive feedback to them to reinforce good reading habits.
While certainly the advantages of children who have been read to are many, I learned from Carey that reading also provides children with a higher level of self-esteem that will assist them throughout their academic pursuits. I enjoyed reading the personal examples of students like Jayden because it showed the real impact of a child’s reading skills or a lack thereof. Both parents as well as educators will enjoy Lorraine Carey’s A Rock Star Reader by Kindergarten because it gives plenty of specific examples and tools to use in developing a love of learning in a child.
