It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to dark subject matter, violence, and sexual situations. Penned by author D A Barr, we find ourselves transported to a future Earth where the human population is declining, and a growing population of anthropomorphic chimeras coexists. The story follows ten characters living in this world, offering a glimpse into their lives and the harsh realities they face. As the characters navigate this world, readers uncover pieces of the underlying puzzle of how this society came to be while new questions and intrigue continue to unfold.
Author D A Barr has crafted a rich and intricate dystopian world that feels eerily plausible and captivating. The use of multiple perspectives, following ten different characters, adds depth and complexity to the story, allowing readers to understand the various facets of this dystopian society, which the author has lovingly developed in minute detail. Each character's journey provides a unique lens through which the world is explored, making it easy to find common ground and empathy with them, and the narrative quality fully supports their individual personalities and journeys. The pacing of the book is well-balanced, gradually revealing new details and building suspense throughout the narrative as the mysteries surrounding Martin Boardman and his formidable power add an element of intrigue and anticipation. Overall, A Promise to the Faceless is an engrossing and imaginative sci-fi novel that presents a compelling dystopian world filled with complex characters and thought-provoking themes, and I can’t wait to see what more this enthralling author has to offer.
