A Predator and a Psychopath is a work of chilling psychological thriller fiction penned by author Jay Kerk. Playing on the tricks of the mind and how frightening these can be, we find ourselves following the journey of mental patient Jason. Recently admitted, Jason is coaxed by the treatment of his doctors to begin to understand himself in ways he never thought possible, whilst unlocking secrets deep within his own mind. It’s difficult to trust whether the stories are new, or simply being unlocked from a shut-off past, and that’s enough to drive any man insane. Written for adults, the book contains graphic violence, sexual references, and explicit language.
Author Jay Kerk presents a true psychological thriller in the sense that everything is stripped back from the story except for the central character, Jason. Though we understand the narrative of his life and past events through the treatment he receives at the institution, this masterful work of character studies breaks narrative convention to focus on the workings of the mind itself. I loved the split in Jason and how fragmented he becomes the more he seems to remember and unlock. There were key elements of real psychological principles in there, showing how extensive Kerk’s research really is into the dangers of the psyche. The plot is graphic and unapologetic, making A Predator and a Psychopath a novel for those who really have the stomach for the dark truth of what a broken mind can do to a human being, and it achieves this goal with style and excellence.
