A Poker Game of Love by Alice H. Walsh deals with the theme of female sexuality and how it can be used potently by women. The story revolves around the main characters of Sylvie, James and Karen and their sexual escapades. All three main characters play each other off cleverly in the game of sex, making the title apt for the story. Sylvie is very ordinary looking but she makes herself eye-catching by wearing attractive clothes. Stephen is her former lover and acquaintance and the man who does the bulk of Sylvie's work, and he does not mind being used by her. James is the man responsible for changing Sylvie's attitude towards sex by making her go through an abusive relationship with him.
The book explores the theme of a dysfunctional relationship which the author has portrayed effectively. Some parts of the plot are disturbing. The behavior of the characters is also disturbing and their take on sex is outrageous. The author's observations about relationships and sex take an upper hand in the plot. Her characterization of the characters and their behavior has been done well to make the plot exciting and compelling. The manner in which partners or lovers use each other in a relationship has been well depicted. The story line is fast paced and will keep readers glued to the pages.
