A Piper's Song is the first book in C.K. Johnson's young adult contemporary fantasy series, The Pied Piper Tales. Kyra's not too happy with transferring to yet another high school, but it's something that her family has to do quite often. This school comes complete with a gorgeous athletic guy whom Kyra can't keep her eyes off. His name is Mark, and he just happens to be going out with Elena, whose cosmetic perfection is somewhat off-putting and intimidating all at the same time. As she watches them in the hallway, without thinking, Kyra hears a song in her head which somehow follows her gaze to Mark, who drops everything and rushes to her side. He breathes her name and gathers her up in his arms. Their kiss seems like it will go on forever, but Kyra knows just how wrong this is, even as she's amazed that she finally, at this late stage in her life, has gotten her powers.
C.K. Johnson's young adult contemporary fantasy, A Piper's Song, is a powerful and original debut novel based on the classic Pied Piper of Hamelin fairy tale. It's also a marvelous coming of age story about a young woman whose unparalleled powers put her and her siblings in danger, not only from her brutal father, but from the rest of his clan. Johnson's characters leap up from the pages of this book; they are that real and compelling. I loved seeing Kyra's brothers stand up to their abusive and controlling father and set up a safe house for her and her siblings. I enjoyed watching as Kyra learns to flex and harness her amazing powers under the guidance and tutelage of her master and mentor, Malcolm. A Piper's Song had me happily enthralled in its grip from start to finish. It's superbly written and features masterfully scripted action scenes and a fabulous plot. Splendid, marvelous, even prodigious! I'm looking forward to the next book in this exciting new series. A Piper's Song is most highly recommended.
