A Picture Day to Remember is a delightful children’s picture book written by Natalia Paruzel-Gibson and illustrated by Nynke Boelens. Lola is a little girl who feels insecure and self-conscious about her freckles so she hides them under a big red hat. On the way to school, she jumps into every puddle to avoid seeing her reflection. One day, all the kids come to school in nice clothes because it’s picture day. Lola always avoids picture day but this time she forgot about it. The photographer Mr. Smirk insists that Lola takes off her big red hat because it covers the faces of the other children. Feeling defeated, Lola takes off her hat and waits for her classmates’ reactions to her freckled face. Nassim, her classmate, finds a clever solution to her predicament. And from this time on, Lola feels confident about her freckles.

Natalia Paruzel-Gibson’s A Picture Day to Remember is an inspiring children’s story. It’s an imaginative take on overcoming insecurities. The beautiful illustrations make use of pastel colors and imaginative details and convey the feelings of the characters well. The story flows well, introducing important lessons about authenticity and self-acceptance. It’s an insightful story in which a young girl struggles to fit in. It is also heart-wrenching to follow Lola as she struggles to hide her freckles from her classmates. However, all's well that ends well, thanks to the ingenious Nassim. Many children are self-conscious and want to be accepted by their peers so they will easily relate to Lola and this story should make them feel less insecure about themselves.
