In A New Take on ABCs - S is for Smiling Sunrise: An Alphabet Book of Goodness, Beauty, and Wonder, author Vick Wadhwa uses more difficult words than used in most ABC books. Beginning with the letter A, the author creates a sing-song rhyme that will catch and hold a child’s attention. As each word is introduced verbally, the illustration introduces the word visually. ”G” is for a Gift introduces the word Gift verbally along with a lesson concerning the joy of giving a gift. The illustration is of one child giving a gift to the other and both children have bright and happy smiles. “K” is for Kaleidoscope introduces the word Kaleidoscope and the illustration shows a Kaleidoscope and what a child might see when looking inside one.
A New Take on ABCs - S is for Smiling Sunrise: An Alphabet Book of Goodness, Beauty, and Wonder is a delightful ABC book. Vick Wadhwa has updated the traditional ABC book using images and illustrations by various artists and by introducing words and concepts that children may not be familiar with: such as leaves make food and nature can be forest, hill and river, sun and clouds, winter, spring and summer. From the words rainbow to sunrise, to universe to excellence, these are all learning opportunities. There is also a song that goes along with this book which can be downloaded from the book’s website. The author had four goals in creating this book: to teach and reinforce the alphabet, to increase vocabulary and comprehension, to support character development, and to simply be enjoyed. I believe the author more than achieved these goals.
