A Murder is Forever: The Diamond District Mystery Series is a sleuth murder mystery novel written by Rob Bates. Mimi Rosen didn’t want an ID card for easy access to the building housing her father’s diamond business. She had trained as a journalist and while she had left her reporter’s job of nine years to take on an editorial position, she still had dreams of being an investigative journalist. When her cousin, Yosef, is brutally murdered right after he finally proposed to Channah, the receptionist at Max’s office, Mimi and Channah decide to team up to discover who killed him and why. They also want to find out more about the 3.2 radiant cut pink diamond the aspiring independent diamond dealer had purchased and that seemed shrouded in mystery. From what they could find out, the diamond had a value of about four million dollars, but did it? Mimi’s investigation seemed to be turning up evidence that the USGR had issued two conflicting gradings of the stone. The first indicated it was a decidedly inferior stone that had been chemically enhanced. Had Yosef paid to have the grade changed?
Rob Bates’s A Murder is Forever had me feeling as though I had come home again. While it’s been some time since I was in New York City, the author easily transported me back to 47th Street, the promenade in Brooklyn Heights, and a host of other familiar locales and New York cultures -- and I loved every minute of it. His plot is fascinating and filled with red herrings, and his characters feel just like people I used to know back, well, you know, in New York. Mimi Rosen is an awesome character whose temporary stint with her dad doesn’t interfere with her skills at investigation. Watching as she navigates her way as a non-observant Jew through the pious community making up the bulk of the 47th Street diamond dealer system is thought-provoking and adds dimension to the story. Present and former New Yorkers will find much to enjoy in this well-written city tale; I know I did. I’m looking forward to future books in this series. A Murder is Forever is a marvelous and impressive debut novel; it’s most highly recommended.
