A Lucky Christmas by Cindy Christmas revolves around Dwayne, a fireman, his wife Ruby, and their two kids, aged eleven and seven. Ruby worked as a babysitter during the weekends. Their lives change drastically when Dwayne gets into a horrible accident and dies on the spot. Ruby is shattered and she finds things become difficult as her part-time job is not covering her rent. It is the Christmas season and she knows it is not that difficult to find a job. But this Christmas is going to be hard for her because she will not only miss Dwayne, but will also have to work two jobs to cover the rent and put food in the fridge. Her supervisor, Wendy, knows that Ruby is going through hard times and invites her to spend Christmas with her and her family. Things change when Ruby gets her Christmas gift. What can it be?
The story captures the spirit of the season very well and gives the hope that things can change and everything passes in life. The illustrations are adorable and they give clarity to the author's words and make the characters real and tangible. Ruby's character has been portrayed well. Her difficulties of managing a home with two kids and no husband are real and relatable to many readers. It is a good bedtime storybook and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries, especially during the Christmas season. The simple story, the positive message in it, Ruby and Wendy will remain in the hearts of readers for a very long time.
