A Lingering Fragrance: Reflections For The Thirsty Soul is a collection of essays described as interludes, short fiction and poetry written by Deepak Menon. The title story, A Lingering Fragrance, is a bittersweet account of an improbable and deep friendship between a woman and a homeless dog, whose time together is measured in moments. Menon shows the change in bearing as the dog revels in the love of his mistress and the joy the two share in their friendship. While Faith would eventually have to move with her family and leave her soul partner behind, there's the knowledge that he would never be forgotten. The essays, on Interludes, are brief commentaries on concepts such as Reason, Sacrifice, Happiness, Knowledge and Respect. In A Flash of Gold in Fields of Green, the narrator is a passenger on a train, and his eyes are captivated by a lone sunflower shining brightly in the green fields that rush by. The vision feeds a metaphorical reverie of a love, and life, long lost.
Deepak Menon's collection of essays, fiction and poetry, A Lingering Fragrance: Reflections For The Thirsty Soul, gives the reader much to contemplate as he/she reads through the diverse sampling of the poet's work contained therein. I was most taken with the title story, A Lingering Fragrance, and found it to be moving and sad, especially when considering the sacrifice Faith must make for her family. A Flash of Gold in Fields of Green is brilliant, subtle and filled with motion and color. The opening paragraphs of the essay, English, is rich and filled with humor. In his opening haiku, Dream Life: "Yearn do I for life/Life eludes my lifeless being/Living in your dream," the poet adroitly uses alliteration and subtle changes in a repeated theme to fully show the opposition between dream and reality. I was most particularly impressed, however, with Menon's nature writing. His natural descriptions are lush and colorful and they work very well indeed. A Lingering Fragrance: Reflections For The Thirsty Soul is recommended.
